Your guide to teaching English in Palestine: Palestine is a complex country. Given it’s a history with Israel, the current ongoing problems and security impositions there as a result, you need to be well informed before visiting. Having said that, this an excellent place to teach English as a volunteer, given the young population, full of potential, which desperately wants to improve life quality through gaining new skills.

Throw in the added incentive of being able to learn Arabic among the locals and it’s easy to see why this is an optimal destination to teach English. This comprehensive guide will help you address all these issues and ensure you have a happy and safe experience teaching English in Palestine.

Do I need any experience?

Experience or a teaching qualification can be very helpful if you want to teach as a volunteer in Palestine but it is not strictly necessary. If you are going for a paid role then you will probably need one if not both of these things, but volunteer programmes are more flexible. Instead, the volunteer programmes provide you with the skills and experience you may need if your goal is to find paid work as a teacher further into your future.

English teaching requirements in Palestine

Interning as an English teacher in Palestine includes a number of benefits that help participants grow personally and professionally. In the Teach English c Program in Palestine you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

What you need:

  • 20+ years of age
  • Have a bachelor degree or a diploma (any subject)
  • Fluent English

What you don’t need:

  • Ability to speak Arabic
  • Travel experience
  • teaching experience
  • To be a native speaker

Choosing where to teach in Palestine

Choosing where to teach can be tricky when you don’t know the country yet. First of all, it’s necessary to say that teaching English in Gaza is not a realistic possibility at this current stage. The Gaza Strip is under blockade and with the siege in place, it is not possible for foreigners to enter. The West Bank has plenty of opportunities to volunteer as an English teacher, whether it’s one of the many refugee camps there or in one of the bigger cities.

As a volunteer teacher without experience, the best advice is to find a suitable NGO that will help organise your trip and help you do fulfilling work in the community. Bethlehem, Jericho and East Jerusalem obviously have large cultural significance due their history, but it might actually be easier to find a voluntary teaching role in Ramallah or Hebron (Al Khalil) due to the high population concentrations in each city.

How to teach English with the Excellence Center

The Excellence Center runs a Teach English, Study Arabic volunteer programme in Hebron the West Bank. To apply for this volunteer programme, contact Rafat Shantir on the contact details below, with your interest in the programme, how long you would like to take it for and any previous experience you might have in teaching.

Should you be successful, the Excellence Center will then ask you to sign a confirmation form and draw up a contract for your involvement.

Getting to Palestine

Depending on where you coming from, coming to Palestine (and Hebron in particular) can be difficult, so be sure to prepare for the visa process appropriately – you will likely be asked questions when you arrive at Ben Gurion airport like how long you intend to stay in Israel-Palestine and where you intend to visit. Once you’re through the airport at Tel Aviv, you still need to navigate to Hebron, which involves going to Jerusalem first and then finding the bus to Hebron (or Al Khalil in Arabic) at the Damascus Gate.

Once here, the Excellence Center’s Palestinian staff will take you in, and show you to your accommodation. If you are female, this will mean staying with a host family, while men will be put in a dormitory together. You will be assigned your own conversational speaking class, and will also do outreach teaching in the public schools in Hebron city and the surrounding villages. You may also be asked to take workshops with university students on subjects such as developing a CV and preparing for a job interview.
