Where can I do an internship in the Middle East: If you want to build a career in a certain field, it can sometimes be difficult to step straight into the ideal role. It’s therefore necessary to take an internship to gain some insight and experience into how certain different types of organisations work and where might be the best fit for you. If the internship goes really well, you may even end being offered a paid/full time position with the organisation in question.

What type of internship?

Here it is very crucial to make the distinction as to which sort of area you would like to work in. The private sector is always the most lucrative as the remuneration on offer is likely to be higher both for the internships in question AND once you obtain a private sector job.

Meanwhile NGOs in the Middle East are for those who want to help people as much as possible without being tied to politics and those working in the public sector strive to find a balance of the different lifestyles whilst working on something about which they are also passionate.

Internships in the private sector in the Middle East

As mentioned, internships in the private sector will usually be the best paid – they should really pay at least minimum wage (depending on labour laws in the particular country).

Private sector internships in the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia are the best paid due to those countries’ affluence stemming from their great oil wealth, but you may find it easier to get a private sector internship in the Levantine area (Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria), simply because there is less outside desire to work in these sort of places.

Interning with your government or with an intergovernmental organisation

Your best bet if you’re looking in this area, is probably to look at internships with local embassies from your home country. Alternatively the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related departments may well have similar programmes operating in the Middle East, particularly in troubled countries where the greatest impact from foreign aid and trade initiatives can be created.

Alternatively, there are the big multi lateral organisations like the United Nations and the European Union which operate in this region. These tend to be very competitive when it comes to applying even for internship roles so you may need a lot of experience to realistically expect to achieve an internship with either.

Internships with NGOs

Non Governmental Organisations in the Middle East tend to operate on much lower budgets than public or private sector organisations, and therefore have a much higher demand for interns and volunteers. They tend to high impact, fulfilling work in the areas that need it most and are not subject to the whims of shareholders or national politics.

The downside to working with an NGO of course though is that the pay is not as good (and often non existent for volunteering roles), so while it can be a fantastic experience, it may well be difficult to sustain a lifestyle for long purely in an internship role. Many interns moonlight in other capacities, maybe as an English teacher or some thing else to earn a bit of extra money to support their dreams.

Internships in Hebron, West Bank, Palestine

The Excellence Center in Palestine offers internship programs for students, native speakers, people who are keen to visit Palestine, experience the Occupation, develop their Curriculum Vitae and help the Palestinian locals in any way they can.

Interns will have the opportunity to put whatever skills they have to help the local communities here in Hebron (or Al Khalil as the locals call it), which have been affected by the deprivations of the Israeli Occupation. This might be offering psychological support to bereaved families or teaching English in the community. The Occupation affects everyone even in such a big city, so there are many people who need outside help.

Who is interested in an internship in the Middle East?

Many interns from all over the world come to join our family in the city of Hebron Palestine which is located in the main heart of Middle East. Most of the interns were from countries like the USA, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, and Canada, etc.

Moreover, the internships programs in the Middle East are suitable for people, students, and native speakers who:

  • Study the Middle East, law or Human Rights studies
  • Gap year students
  • University Students who wish to do a semester abroad (University Credit)
  • Participants who are interested to understand the politics of Middle East
  • Arabic and Islamic Studies students
  • Participants who wish to learn Arabic and immerse in the Middle Eastern culture and daily life
  • Everyone who is willing to help and make a difference in the Middle East

Work in the Palestinian community

Interns will be assigned a liaison manager to oversee their development and their work in the community as well as a personal Arabic tutor to give them private tuition in the local language, in order to be able to help the locals as much as possible. In addition, interns are provided with accommodation as well as most of their meals as a standard part of the programme.

There is also a cultural exchange element of the programme as volunteers have the opportunity to visit the other fascinating historical cities of Palestine including Jericho, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nablus as well as the modern administrative capital of Ramallah (which is also well known for its nightlife). You’ll have a fantastic opportunity to learn about the culture from the locals and even sample of the tasty Palestinian dishes.

Make new friends

The best part of the whole experience is that you will make friends here – both international and Palestinian and the latter will even be able to help you with your Arabic language learning long after you have actually left the region…

After all what is a native Arabic speaking friend but a language tutor in disguise! We are highly reviewed by all former interns, so for more information, intern testimonials and review scores, visit our website, or contact Rafat Shantir on the details provided below.
