About Displaced Peoples in Palestine

Many people are surprised to discover that Palestinian refugees are living within Palestine itself. In fact, the Palestinian diaspora is the largest group of displaced people in the world, with approximately 7.1 million individuals scattered across the globe.

This phenomenon has its roots in two pivotal events of the mid-20th century. The first occurred in 1948 during the Nakba, when Palestinians were forced to flee their homes to escape Israeli militias. The second was the 1967 Six-Day War, which resulted in Israel occupying the Syrian Golan Heights, the West Bank, Gaza, and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula, while also illegally annexing Jerusalem. Between the Nakba and the Six-Day War, the West Bank was administered by Jordan and the Gaza Strip by Egypt. However, both territories came under Israeli control following the war.

During the Nakba, over 700,000 Palestinians fled their homes in what would become the new state of Israel, seeking refuge in territories that subsequently came under Jordanian and Egyptian control. These individuals became refugees, and their descendants are still assigned refugee status.

Palestinians also sought refuge in other parts of the region, including Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. Notably, Jordan was the only country that granted citizenship to newly displaced refugees. Over time, many Palestinians also migrated to regions such as Europe and the Americas.

Support Palestinian Refugee Camps

Palestinian refugees fall under the purview of the United Nations, with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency–more commonly referred to as the UNRWA–supporting 19 Palestinian refugee camps within the West Bank alone. The conditions in these camps, such as Al Fawwar or Al Arroub, are notoriously overcrowded and inadequate, with residents lacking access to essential services, infrastructure, and basic necessities, including sufficient schools and hospitals to meet the population’s needs.

The Palestinian refugee camps in the West Bank began as sprawling tent cities. However, as it became clear that a return would not occur in the near future, tents were gradually replaced by stone structures, leading to cramped concrete quarters. As a result, these camps now have exceptionally high population densities, with residents frequently facing housing shortages and overcrowding.

Program Description

As a volunteer for the summer Palestinian Refugees Program 2025, your prime responsibility will be offering educational and cultural services to the Palestinian refugee community. The Excellence Center in Palestine’s efforts are primarily directed toward education since this is a critical need. The importance of working within these camps alongside refugees cannot be overstated.

Because these Palestinian refugee camps are outside the main city centers, the people residing within them have limited opportunities to connect with international visitors and practice their English. The Center, therefore, tries its best to respond to this need by organizing educational and community activities to bring Palestinians and international participants together.

Program Components:

  • Volunteer with Palestinian children in refugee camps
  • Create workshops for Palestinians in local refugee camps
  • Conduct musical or theatrical performances
  • Assist local human rights and charity organizations
  • Aid local NGOs in providing medical assistance to refugees
  • Enroll in Arabic language courses
  • Participate in Center-led excursions to Palestinian cultural sites
