Tips for Leisure while you are in Palestine: Whilst Palestine is a small country, there is plenty to see and do in this fascinating region. It may not have the tourist attractions that its neighbor Jordan does, nevertheless, visitors can explore a range of sites, cities, and experience Palestine’s natural beauty, largely without the tourist crowds.
Make visits around Hebron
Beginning in the Southern city of Hebron, the old city is a must-see for visitors. The old stone buildings and winding lanes are full of history and beauty, whilst the city’s troubles cast a tense feel over the area. Markets selling authentic goods line the streets of the old city under the caged ceiling which prevent the Jewish settlers from throwing rubbish at the Palestinians. The old city is a great spot to stop and talk with friendly locals and hear their interesting stories.
Visit Places in Bethlehem
Being the most visited city in Palestine, Bethlehem has a completely different feel to Hebron. Tourists flock to this city, many of which come to see the birthplace of Jesus at the Church of the Nativity. Another popular site is the wall separating Palestine from Israel, covered in art and graffiti displaying messages in support for the Palestinian resistance, including the famous artwork by well-known street artist Banksy.
Other points of interest include the Mar Saba Monastery, the Sanctuary of Bethlehem, Milk Grotto, and the Old Bethlehem Museum.
Make a trip to Jerusalem
After visiting Bethlehem, visitors should make the short trip to Jerusalem, a city which needs no introduction. Jerusalem possesses a blend of culture, history, and religion, mixed with trendy bars, hipster cafes and a thriving music and arts scene, and is a must-see for those visiting Palestine.
Do not forget to go to Jericho
Another must see in Palestine is the city of Jericho, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. In this beautiful city, visitors can see Hisham’s Palace, Mount of Temptation, Nabi Musa (believed to be the tomb of Moses) and many more. Only ten kilometers from Jericho is the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth.
Here people can take a break from the city life and relax in the water which has such a high salt level, people can float effortlessly on its surface.
Visit the modern city of Ramallah
Other things to do include a visit to the administrative capital of the West Bank Ramallah, a bustling modern city. The Mahmoud Darwish Museum presents a fascinating insight into the history of Palestine and allows visitors to view the actual bunker where former leader and Palestinian iconic figure Yasser Arafat hid during the famous siege.
Visitors should also visit the Northern city of Nablus to see a raw reality of the occupation Palestinians experience in daily life.
Try to meet new people as much as you can
While there are many sites and cities to include in one’s visit to Palestine, arguably the most rewarding experience they will have is the people they meet during their stay. Palestinians are very hospitable and friendly, so expect to meet lots of people many of which may offer to show you around the city and even invite you over to dinner.
