Introduction to Best volunteer teaching programmes in the Middle East: The Middle East is a region that consistently makes the news for all sorts of reasons. One thing that is fairly universal through out this diverse region of over five hundred million people and seventeen countries, is the desire for individuals to improve their lives. Whether it is learning the English so prevalent everywhere on their social media or through learning valuable life skills or supplementing their school studies with extra tuition, the demand for volunteer teachers in the region is large.

How should I select a programme that’s right for me?

If as someone from outside this fascinating region, you decide you would like to become a volunteer teacher here, we would recommend you first be clear about what it is you want to achieve. would you like to furthering your CV? then you need to select a programme that fits that ambition.

Additionally, If your primary concern is having the best and most fulfilling experience, likewise there are programmes that cater more to that side of things. Whatever you do, be sure to research thoroughly where you want to go and what you want to do to avoid an expectations gap when you arrive.

What kinds of places should I take a programme like this?

There are plenty of different organisations you can take a voluntary teaching programme with, whether it’s an NGO operating in the region, in a refugee camp or with a private language school – each has its own advantages and disadvantages. NGOs can offer a great experience but not all of them are fully professional, so you may find that the experience you see on the website doesn’t match the reality if you are unlucky!

Refugee camps are a very fulfilling place to volunteer as a teacher, but it can be difficult to organise a role as most organisations look for teachers with experience. Finally language schools can be a good option as they tend to be more professionalised, but you may not be making as large an impact as you would like!

Where are the best programmes for this in the Middle East?

In the Middle East, there is a large variety of all these organisations operating to help the inhabitants of the region. The best programmes will be with the most highly professionalised organisations like the UN or the British Council of course, but you can still find very good programmes with less sought after organisations providing they meet you criteria and they are well reviewed – always look for volunteer testimonies to see if previous volunteers have had a good experience.

Once I’ve got a programme organised, how should I prepare for it?

Again, do some research about the country and the specific location you are visiting. Be sure to brush up any Arabic you have and look into appropriate behaviour for the country given it will probably follow Muslim morality. Also pack anything you need in terms of bug spray, medicine (if you are susceptible to a dodgy tummy!) and clothing appropriate for the climate (remember the Middle East can get very hot in summer, but also very cold in winter, especially at night!).
