Traveling from the Tel-Aviv Airport to Hebron: “The first thing I noticed when traveling from the Tel-Aviv Airport to Hebron were the flags on the roads. First, they were Israeli flags all over. After the “sherut” dropped me right opposite the Damascus Gate I walked towards the men that shouted “El-Khalil!” “El-Khalil!” and found the services to Hebron. Ten minutes after we left Jerusalem the flags on the roads changed from Israeli to Palestinians. For me, the flags were the only way to tell whether I was in the Israeli or Palestinian soil. It was that easy to travel from Jerusalem to West Bank.
Maybe I just got lucky but we didn’t come across any checkpoints or Israeli soldiers on the way. It took about an hour for me to reach Hebron from Jerusalem and I had absolutely no trouble along the way. Because there are almost no signs or directions, finding which bus to take or which place to stop was a bit more difficult than it is in Europe, but that is of course something I expected before coming here.
With all the signs in Arabic and Hebrew, you too, may feel like you are lost or out of place. Remember to ask people for directions if you do, and there will surely be someone to help you.
In my experience, it was really safe, easy and cheap to travel from Tel-Aviv to West Bank. I have been to Bethlehem in the first week I came here and that was also a very easy journey. So I would say to anyone thinking of coming to Hebron that there is nothing to be concerned about in terms of safety.” This Article was written by our Volunteer Mehlike from Turkey
