Qahwah Culture in Hebron, Palestine: One of the more notable discoveries while spending time in Hebron, West Bank, Palestine with the Excellence Center is the overwhelming hospitality of the Palestinian people. This is perhaps best displayed through the service & culture of Qahwah (coffee). The traditional Arabic presentation is considered a ceremonial act of generosity, and the residents of Hebron carry on this tradition with affable warmth.

The presentation of Arabic Qahwah

Visitors to Palestine are invited into storefronts or to visit family homes to relax and socialize. Most all of these welcomes include the presentation of Arabic Qahwah. In contrast to that of western countries, “Arabic Coffee” is boiled with the grounds still in.

Qahwah is poured from a Dallah

The host or eldest son serves the guests coffee in the small mocha cups. Historically, Qahwah is poured from a Dallah (a brass coffee pot), but any good rakwe (long handled coffee pot) will do. Tradition (and courtesy) indicates that the guests drink at least one cup, but no more than three. Once finished, those partaking may offer “Daymen” (“Always”) as an expression of goodwill.

In addition to these neighborly gatherings, many coffee shops exists near the Excellence Center along Ein Sarah Street, Hebron, Palestine and beyond, including Coffee Corner, Ketcake, Coffee Shop Feyrouz, Snap Coffee and River Chocolates & More. You can indulge in a tasty qatayef or maamoul to go along with your beverage of choice.

Qahwah culture extends beyond sustenance and conversation

Furthermore, Qahwah culture extends beyond sustenance and conversation, into the representation of history itself. Palestinian artist Yazan Ghareeb paints with his daily coffee grounds to depict the old cities of Palestine as related to traditional and continuing customs. Yazan can enjoy his Qahwah by morning while offering a his art to others beyond the day.

Qahwah is an important part of Arabic culture

Throughout history, Qahwah has been an important part of Arabic culture not only as a beverage, but as a means to connect with family and friends. This tradition is on full display throughout Palestine and is a testament to the grace of the Palestinian people.
