Life as an American In Hebron, Palestine: Before arriving in Palestine we had many preconceived notions about the country because of American media and politics. Fortunately, all of these worries and thoughts were proven wrong the moment we entered the city of Hebron.

Upon arrival we were immediately greeted with kind smiles and endless “welcomes” and “you are welcome here”. Every person that we have come across since being in Hebron has treated us with the upmost respect and sincerity. We have never in our lives felt more comfortable leaving the door to our apartment open or unlocked. Generosity is a staple of the culture here in Hebron and this is evident. The people of Hebron are always eager to invite you into their homes for a delicious meal.

Hebron is a very traditional city that does not host many foreigners. For this reason, many people will turn their heads and look at you while walking to the Center or market. Do not be alarmed. The people of Hebron are merely eager to show foreigners that they are welcoming and kind.

These looks are almost always followed by a welcoming introduction. Many Palestinian people in Hebron know English somewhat and are excited to practice what they know.

The family that lives next to us is very welcoming and kind. Every day they spend time getting to know us and helping us with any problems we may have no matter how little it may be. The people of Hebron are eager to learn from us as well as teach us about their culture. We would recommend this program to anyone from America who wishes to visit a warm and welcoming city full of wonderful people.
