Experiencing Palestinian Culture: When volunteering in Palestine, your Palestinian host family plays a crucial role in immersing you in Palestinian culture and daily life. In this region, families hold significant importance, serving as the fundamental building blocks of social life. Often, extended families reside together, fostering close relationships, and it’s not uncommon to find multiple generations, including numerous grandchildren, sharing a home. As a result, the family environment is vibrant and lively, especially if you enjoy the company of Palestinian children.

Embracing Palestinian Hospitality

Beyond the immediate family, it’s customary to venture out in the evenings to visit maternal relatives or more distant cousins. Some nights, your Palestinian host family’s home may fill with cousins and friends, while on other occasions, you might be invited to partake in casual visits and neighborhood events. Whichever way it unfolds, this presents an excellent opportunity to meet new people and become an active part of the Palestinian community in the West Bank.

Life with a Palestinian Host Family: A Window into the Heart of the Community

As foreigners in the West Bank, Palestine, we are seldom excluded from family activities, as Palestinian culture places a strong emphasis on hospitality and generosity. Enthusiastic participants in the family’s daily affairs, we are often flooded with invitations, making it challenging to accept them all! Several times a week, the family extends dinner invitations, treating us to delicious home-cooked meals.

Expect traditional Palestinian dishes like stuffed grape leaves, maqluba, and kofta – and be prepared to indulge, as a Palestinian family will never let you leave their table hungry! The warm gestures continue, as our host mom diligently refills our plates each time they are emptied. Invitations to share tea, coffee, nuts, candy, and fruit – especially refreshing watermelon in the summer – are also commonplace.

From Weddings to Feasts: Celebrating Traditions with Host Families in Palestine

Apart from these routine invitations, we are fortunate enough to experience special occasions with the host family. Attending a Palestinian wedding is a remarkable and vibrant experience, especially during the summer. Throughout my weeks in Palestine, I have already attended two weddings with my host family, and each one has been a memorable event.

Moreover, we may be invited to other celebrations such as engagement parties or birthday gatherings. If we plan well, we might even have the chance to partake in larger holidays like Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr, though it might require adjusting our volunteering or class schedule. However, the joy and festivity shared with the host family during these occasions make it all worthwhile. The family members take pleasure in explaining and involving visitors in these grand events, making it an unforgettable experience.

Language Immersion and Cultural Insights

One of the most beneficial aspects of being with a Palestinian host family is the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Arabic language. While many host families have members who speak English proficiently, most of them primarily communicate in Arabic. Engaging in conversation with the family is an excellent way to rapidly pick up the language. During dinners and larger gatherings, conversations can be fast-paced, presenting a fun challenge to keep up. Although it may seem intimidating for those with limited Arabic skills, there is no need to worry. The family members are patient and willing to work with us, often using tools like Google Translate to facilitate communication.

Additionally, since multiple volunteers are usually placed together with each family, there’s mutual support among non-native speakers. Regardless of our language level, direct conversation remains one of the most effective ways to gain insights into life and culture in Palestine. Palestinian family members are eager to discuss any topic we’re curious about, providing a valuable window into the daily life and specific experiences under occupation.

Final Remarks

Moreover, our Palestinian host family serves as an invaluable resource for local recommendations and travel advice within the area. Their support and insider knowledge are tremendously helpful in navigating the region of West Bank, Palestine. Having a local family looking out for us, explaining various aspects of life, and inviting us to events around town have significantly defined and enriched my experience in Palestine, and for that, I’m immensely grateful.
