Volunteer in a Journalism program in Palestine
In our Journalism Volunteer Program, you will get valuable experience in teaching our young Palestinian men and women about the world of journalism and training them in writing proper articles, getting reliable information, and checking their sources. This is an incredible opportunity for a great variety of people: we welcome anyone who has an interest and/or competence in journalism or media, from pre-college students to postgraduate students with a degree in Journalism, English, or relevant work experience.
Brief information about the program
The Journalism volunteer project will have its headquarters at Excellence Center’s facilities in Hebron, Palestine, and will be a great opportunity for you to come to Palestine, share your knowledge and experience in journalism, and create and execute journalism projects with the citizens of Hebron. For this project, you will plan and execute classes, seminars, and activities focused on teaching skills related to the field of journalism. To this end, you will research and work with media organizations in and around Hebron in order to provide your students with an all-encompassing experience in your course.

When you arrive to the Center in Hebron, Palestine
Before being assigned a schedule, volunteers will be welcomed at the Center and will be given an orientation week about Hebron and Palestinian culture, including both Arabic classes and an introduction to Palestinian culture. In order for you to be as involved as possible in the Palestinian community and culture, we will provide you with accommodation with a Palestinian host family who will take care of you and will help you with any issue that might come up. After the introduction week, the volunteers themselves will get to decide what kind of activities they will develop during their stay in Palestine, based on one’s individual interests, field of competence, and level of experience and skills. We are very flexible, and you will be completely free to choose what activities to implement in your own schedule.
Which kind of activities you can organize during the volunteering period?
There are many activities suitable for all level that we wish to carry out at the Excellence Center, local schools, universities, and community centers in Hebron during this program, such as:
- Lectures and workshops about the news world, which may include
- Introduction to journalistic terminology (what’s a news agency? how do they work and which are the most important ones?).
- Making photo and producing short films
- The roles people cover in a newsroom and their responsibilities.
- Workshops about writing articles in a journalistic style.
- Classes about the importance of gaining consent from interview participants and how to do so (what’s journalistic consent? when do we need a declaration of consent?)
- Workshops about designing and organizing a newspaper (headlines, frontpage, the importance of the word count and so on)
- Workshops about checking facts and sources.
- How to write a bibliography.
- Visits to local radios, newsrooms and TV broadcasters.
- If the number of students allows it, organizing a contest in which student will be divided into two or more groups and they will:
- Participate to the above-mentioned activities in the morning and running research and interviews in the afternoon.
- Design their own newspaper edition (about 2 pages).
- Issue a short documentary about a particular problem.
This last activity will be followed by an award ceremony (award for the best documentary, the best article, the best frontpage, the best teamwork etc.).
Typical day at the Excellence Center
You will work about 30 hours a week, from around 9 am until 5pm on Saturday to Thursday, with a lunch break at approximately 12:30. Normally, international volunteers start the day with breakfast at the Excellence Center together with the whole staff, which includes both teachers, volunteers from other programs, and directors. The schedule for this program is highly flexible but is subject to change every few days. In addition to your work teaching, you will have Arabic classes, will prepare lesson plans for the workshops and activities you will do, and will do a bit of sightseeing in Hebron.
In conclusion, our Journalism volunteer opportunity in Palestine is a unique opportunity to get valuable experience in your field of interest in addition to gathering precious first-hand information about Palestine, its people and culture as well as making a major contribution to the community.
Since the Excellence Center does not receive any funds from any governmental or non-governmental organizations, the Excellence Center charges a fee of 695$ a month or 230$ a week.
The program fees include: pre-departure support, accommodations, breakfast, full coordination while volunteering in Palestine, 3 hours per week of Arabic lessons for each week you volunteer, and some visits to different sites in the city of Hebron.

You will easily meet many Palestinian university and school students as well as community members with a variety of interests. Especially in Hebron, Palestinian people love to meet new people from different cultures and exchange ideas and experiences.
Moreover, the Excellence Center hosts many international visitors from all over the world who will be studying, volunteering, visiting or interning at center. Of course, you will engage with them in some educational and community activities that the Center organizes.
Everyone at the Excellence Center – Palestinian students, international visitors, and staff – are like one family and there are always activities to do together. Hebron is a good place for international visitors to stay at and offers a great social atmosphere
Eligibility for Volunteer in a Journalism Program in Palestine Program
People who are between 18 – 70 years old are eligible to participate in the Technology Volunteer in Palestine Program. All nationalities and majors are welcome! You do not have to have any degree to participate in this program.
When “Volunteer in a Journalism Program in Palestine Program” takes place
The Excellence Center is looking for international volunteers year-round. Volunteers decide when they would like to start and Excellence Center organizes so. We are very flexible when it comes to starting and ending dates. Participants freely choose their volunteer period.
Which Airport Should I Start Checking for Flights to Palestine?
The easiest way to get to the Excellence Center in Hebron, Palestine is to fly to Tel Aviv Airport (Israel). It takes about two and half hours from the airport to the Excellence Center in Hebron via shared Taxi.
You can also fly to Amman, Jordan and then cross to Palestine, but it takes more time and is more expensive.
Visa to Palestine
Upon your arrival at Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv Airport), Israel, you will be granted a tourist visa valid for 90 days. There is no need to obtain a visa ahead of time.
