On November 2, the Excellence Center held an Academic Writing workshop for university students. This is one of several workshops the Center offers free of charge to local students to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. The aim of the workshop is to provide students with writing strategies and practice for English academic writing. The workshop was led by volunteers Jan from Belgium and Monica from America who are both serving as English Teachers in the Teach English Study Arabic program.
During the workshop the teachers discussed the difference between everyday language and academic language and how to use the latter for stronger academic writing. They also offered many exercises to allow students to practice the new information, such as rewriting texts using word economy and effectively proofreading. Around 12 students attended the workshop, most of them undergraduate students in fields such as English Literature, Engineering, Business, and Medicine .
As usual with courses and workshops at the Excellence Center, the students were all quite eager and enthusiastic to learn something new. Volunteer Monica reports “I had to do endless writing for my degree in the Social Sciences, so I am glad that I can help in providing this invaluable skill to young people who are working hard to improve themselves for a better future.”
